President Donald Trump is either fluent in Italian, or just flat-out didn’t give a shit what the Italian Prime Minister said at the G7 summit.
A viral video tweeted by BBC reporter James Landale shows Italian Prime Minister Paulo Gentiloni addressing fellow world leaders at the G7 summit in Sicily, with all but one world leader listening through translation earpieces. The camera pans across German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi, President Trump, and Niger President Mahamadou Issoufou. Everyone but Trump is wearing the standard earpiece:

While the video created the impression that Trump wasn’t listening, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer insisted that President Trump had his own earpiece in his right ear (which is not shown in the video), and that he was listening to Gentiloni’s speech along with everyone else.

Of course, people quickly accused Spicer of lying, with one Twitter user suggesting that if it was just Trump’s right ear showing, Spicer would insist the earpiece was in his left ear. In the clip, Trump is seen completely still, not moving his head with his eyes firmly fixed to the desk in front of him, suggesting that he may have been covertly sleeping during Gentiloni’s speech:

Trump concluded his nine-day international trip — his first as president — this weekend, after visiting Saudi Arabia, Israel, Belgium, and Italy. He’ll head back to Europe for the G20 summit in July, where German chancellor Angela Merkel will be hosting the summit in Hamburg, Germany.
