Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos continues to draw out protesters, this time, on a visit to Florida International University (FIU).
DeVos began the day by visiting the private charter CARE Elementary School (Christian Academy for Reaching Excellence), in Miami’s Overtown neighborhood. Prior to visiting the SLAM charter school (Sports Leadership and Management, partially owned by entertainer Pitbull), Secretary DeVos was scheduled to visit the Nicole Wertheim School of Nursing and Health Sciences at FIU.
At FIU, DeVos was met by a crowd of protesters both entering and exiting the school, who challenged her both on her knowledge of public education in and of itself, and whether or not her appointment to head the agency was influenced by her brother, Blackwater founder Erik Prince. DeVos’ brother is currently in the news for being assigned by a foreign government (United Arab Emirates) to arrange a communications backchannel between Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, of the Russian Federation, regarding Russia’s support of Iran in Syria.
The Miami New Times reported that a protester — who requested his name be withheld due to past threats related to his activism — confronted DeVos as she was leaving a meeting with university administrators, and yelling “You don’t know anything about education!” as she was escorted into an elevator by Secret Service agents. As DeVos fled the protester, she walked out the front door of the school only to be met by more protesters. She then hurried into the car and drove off campus.
