Trump administration excludes LGBTQ people from 2020 Census

President Donald Trump’s administration is apparently attempting to amend the 2020 U.S. Census to exclude the LGBTQ population.

The National LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) Task Force — the oldest LGBTQ advocacy group in the country — combed through government documents and found that the Trump administration is secretly attempting to effectively erase LGBTQ Americans by changing Census questions to omit the “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” fields.

“Information from these surveys helps the government to enforce federal laws like the Violence Against Women Act and the Fair Housing Act and to determine how to allocate resources like housing supports and food stamps,” stated Meghan Maury, who is listed as the Criminal and Economic Justice Project Director for the National LGBTQ Task Force. “If the government doesn’t know how many LGBTQ people live in a community, how can it do its job to ensure we’re getting fair and adequate access to the rights, protections and services we need?”

“We call on President Trump and his Administration to begin collecting sexual orientation and gender identity data on the American Community Survey as soon as possible and urge Congress to conduct oversight hearings to reveal why the Administration made the last-minute decision not to collect data on LGBTQ people,” she added.

In addition to the Task Force, Chelsea Clinton — daughter of former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton — took notice.

“This is outrageous. No one should be invisible,” the former First Daughter tweeted.

The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), which is one of the most prominent LGBTQ advocacy groups in the U.S., sent off a series of tweets on Tuesday night, calling on their more than 750,000 followers to tell President Trump to include LGBTQ Americans in the 2020 Census.
