Republican Rep. Tom Garrett of Virginia apparently has a new standard for justified criticism of the president: at least he’s not a Nazi.
Garrett made comments along those lines in a town hall meeting with constituents this week. “America has overcome amazing challenges that Donald Trump, as frightening as he is to some people, small potatoes compared to Nazi Germany,” the Republican Congressman said.

His comments were greeted with several boos from his audience members. Garrett sarcastically answered the boos by asking, “So he’s worse?”
Garrett added that he had faith in the nation to move forward despite some people’s problems with the president. “This great nation will continue to move forward by virtue of the collective of American people,” he said.
Garrett also questioned whether an independent counsel would be needed to investigate Trump, though he made his comments before news broke of James Comey’s firing as director of the FBI. Garrett said he didn’t see a need for an independent review because he hadn’t personally seen evidence of collusion between Russia and Trump.
Many people on Twitter were not amused by Garrett’s standards.
