Randy Bryce, a Democrat challenging Paul Ryan for his Congressional seat in 2018, just released his first campaign ad, and it’s brilliant.
Bryce is a blue-collar worker and a lifelong resident of southeastern Wisconsin. He works in an iron refinery with other Wisconsinites who are frustrated with the lack of compassion from Paul Ryan and other House Republicans toward average working people. Bryce’s ad opens up with President Trump congratulating Ryan on the House’s vote to pass Trumpcare, which, if signed into law, would take healthcare away from more than 20 million people.
“My mom is probably the most important person in my life,” Bryce says in the beginning of the ad, after his mother describes suffering from a debilitating health condition that requires expensive prescription drugs. “There’s no doubt in my mind that there are thousands of people like her.”
“I work hard, and I earn every penny that I make,” Bryce continues. “And I know everybody that I work with is the same way.”
While Paul Ryan — who became Speaker of the House in 2015 — had held onto his seat since 1999, he faces a serious challenge in the 2018 midterm elections. The Speaker is one of the leaders of the political establishment that typically suffers losses in midterms, and is also seen as the primary architect of the widely unpopular Republican healthcare bill that pays for additional tax cuts for wealthy Americans by gutting healthcare for millions of Americans.
Speaker Ryan is also particularly vulnerable in 2018, as the U.S. Supreme Court has agreed to hear a case challenging the gerrymandered Congressional district lines in Wisconsin, which benefited Ryan by adding the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha to his district. Waukesha County is arguably the reddest part of Wisconsin.
