The independent counsel headed by former FBI Director Robert Mueller is officially investigating President Trump and whether he committed obstruction of justice.
According to the Washington Post, the investigation into Trump’s possible obstruction of justice within a few days after former FBI Director James Comey was abruptly fired. Since his appointment as special counsel, Mueller has steadily continued this work. While many high level operatives within the Trump administration have thus far been the subject of investigation, this is the first report that Trump himself is also being investigated.
Officials close to the matter say that Mueller considers the investigation to be more than a “he said, he said” conflict between Trump and fired FBI Director James Comey.
Comey believes he was fired because he refused to shut down the Russian investigation, offering testimony of one instance where Trump specifically asked him to back off of former national security adviser Michael Flynn, as well as another instance where Trump asked for his “loyalty.”
“It’s my judgment that I was fired because of the Russia investigation,” Comey said during a congressional hearing. “I was fired, in some way, to change – or the endeavor was to change the way the Russia investigation was being conducted.” The Trump administration denies this, and have offered conflicting explanations for Comey’s firing, including an admission from Trump himself that the Russia investigation was a significant factor.
The White House now sends all questions pertaining to the Russia investigation to Trump’s lawyer, whose spokesman said today that “The FBI leak of information regarding the President is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal.”
The news of Mueller’s investigation comes shortly after a longtime friend of Trump’s, Chris Paddy, said in an interview that the president was strongly considering firing Mueller, with Trump raging that the man who served as FBI Director for both the Bush and Obama administrations was incapable of conducting the investigation without partisan bias.
