Germans React to Trump’s Botched Meeting with Angela Merkel Like Only Germans Can

Progressive Twitter users have been gleefully mocking the bizarre meeting between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Trump for over 24 hours now.

During their meeting, Trump apparently refused to shake the hand Merkel on one occasion, and also made a joke about his baseless claims that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower, saying he and Merkel “have something in common.” (A reference to WikiLeaks revelations that US intelligence wiretapped Merkel’s phone, a scandal whose wounds are still fresh in the US-German relationship.)

We compiled ten of our favorite American tweets lampooning the meeting here, but why let a little language barrier keep us from seeing German reactions?

Here are some of our favorites, with translations above each tweet as needed:

“Have you tidied your room? Look at me when I talk to you!” (text on pic)

“Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a new meme”

“Sweet memories.”

“The hand is not the woman’s body part that Donald Trump would stretch his hand to.”

“I wanted to shake Trump’s hand, but his hands are so small that he could not find them. Awkward silence.” (Merkel parody account)

“Had the White House quite different in my memory.” (Merkel parody account)

“And here is the first photo of Merkel meeting Trump.”

“(Horst) Seehofer is going to be jealous. This look is reserved for him.” (Seehofer is a politician with whom Merkel often clashes.)

“Mom is knocking them all out.”

Before hating your job, think about Merkel: She has to see Trump today. -> THAT is bad.”
