Respected scientist and former TV host Bill Nye said that President Trump’s administration has hired “the least qualified” possible Cabinet in order to destabilize the federal government.
“There is a technique of dismantling government from within, which is the thinking of (Trump adviser Steven) Bannon,” Nye told the Guardian. “They are hiring the least qualified people on the planet to run the agencies, such as Mr Pruitt at the EPA and Ms DeVos at the department of education.”
Bannon has previously spoken of his desire to deconstruct the “administrative state.” EPA head Scott Pruitt famously does not believe that human activity is causing global warming and has spent much of his career suing the EPA. Dept. of Education head Betsy DeVos is an advocate for charter schools who has previously called public schools a “dead end,” despite having no previous experience in public schools.
Nye co-chaired the March for Science, during which thousands of scientists have marched against President Trump’s anti-science policies and decisions, including the hiring of Pruitt.
“We are in a dangerous place right now,” Nye said. “Science has always been political but we don’t want science to be partisan. Objective truths have become set aside and diminished and lawmakers are acting like a strong belief in something is as valid as careful peer review.”
